General Review, by Nancy Wagner
Most of her life, Loewen has either lived or ministered among Muslims. Born in Yemen to American missionary parents, she observed and accompanied her parents as they ministered to Muslims in Somalia and Ethiopia. Feeling called to missionary work herself, she attended Moody Bible Institute where she met her future husband. After they married, they spent ten years in Pakistan ministering at a mission hospital in the rural Himalayan foothills. Here Loewen came to love Muslim women and learned how to share her love of Jesus with them. Later she and her husband returned to Canada, his home, where they now minister to Muslim university students, immigrants, and refugees, many of whom have become her personal friends.
Loewen introduces the reader to a variety of Muslim women, each with her own personal situation. These women face many of the same issues American Christian women face, but they also must deal with issues from their religion and their culture. As Loewen meets and becomes a friend to each of these ladies, she works to help them deal with all these issues and stresses that all women need to strive to find common ground as well as understand the differences we have.
Loewen shares heart-warming life stories as she helps these Muslem women learn English, feel accepted in American/Canadian culture, and come to know Jesus as more than just a prophet. She works to alleviate the fears these women face. Fear and superstition is very much a part of their culture as Muslim women not only fear their God but many times their husbands and fathers as well.
Loewen’s purpose in sharing her experiences and friendships is to help Christian women understand how to befriend Muslim women. With a great deal of compassion, she encourages the reader to develop a connection with these women and emphasizes that by sharing the Gospel with them, we can bring the love of Jesus to them and bring joy to their lives and salvation to their souls.
